I ran ten miles in Island Park. Started at Macks Inn and took the old highway down to Elk Creek. At Elk Creek I crossed Highway 20 and ran down the Yale-Kilgore road until I reached the dirt road that leads to coffe pot campground. I took that road back to Macks Inn and then back to my place. I averaged 9:00 minute miles. For the third Saturday in a row my legs felt tired. I'm not sure if my interval training is wearing me out or if I'm not getting in enough miles during the week.

Welcome to the Blog! You should be able to run St. George in 3:30 with a slight improvement from your Ogden shape. St. George is siginficantly faster.

Total Distance

I ran five miles in 43:25. I went down Madison to 40th. Up 40th to Harrison and then back down 40th to the hospital. Around the hospital to Glasmann. Up Glassman to Artic Circle and then down to Birch Creek Hollow and up Jefferson. Tough run with a lot of hills. Ran the last mile at a 7:45 pace. Overall the run felt good after the first mile.

Good luck at St. George, it seems you are not running many miles for wanting a 3:30? Are you cross training? You must be natural good runner, if your mileage is as low as indicated on your blog. B of BS Rools out.

I ran the trails above Ogden. a lot of climbing. A difficult but nice run. Overall I felt good.

I ran the Provo River Half marathon. My time from when I started was 1:37:25. I was up by the bathrooms when the gun went off and didn't realize the race was getting ready to start. I wasn't real happy about having to run around people for the first mile but after that it opened up and I was able to drop down to 7:00 minute miles between mile two and the hill at about mile 6 and half. Overall it was a great run today. This was the best I've felt in quite a while.

This is a definite improvement over your earlier half-marathons, and shows you are capable of 3:20-3:25 in St. George if you train well to develop the marathon type of endurance.

From Dee on Tue, Aug 15, 2006 at 10:28:29

Thanks,

My problem is maintaining a decent pace after mile 22. Any suggestions other than just long runs to get my endurance up?

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Aug 16, 2006 at 15:09:44

Eat right. Be patient. Do weekly 10-12 mile tempo runs at marathon race pace + 4 miles of jogging instead of a traditional long run. Maintain a steady daily mileage ( at least 8 miles) 6 days a week for a couple of years.

You may also try to figure out the right type of drink/food to take in at the right place. Different things work for different people. My magic formula - nothing for the first 11-13 miles, not even water unless it is really hot. Then Powerade at every station.

You have to figure out why exactly you are slowing down. There could be several reasons - legs quitting, out of fuel, or maybe even the brain/nervous system quitting. High mileage and consistent training can fix a good portion of the problem, but then there are what I call health issues - eg. the liver being out of whack and not holding the fuel, digestive messed up and not being able to process carbohydrates quickly as you run, etc.

Due to a bee sting that caused my right foot to swell today was the first day I've been able to run this week. I kept a pretty consistent nine minute pace. My legs felt surprisingly fresh. I expected some soreness after Saturday's run and the three days of inactivity. My route had some hills but was mostly flat.

Total Distance
5.34

the first two miles was mostly uphill. I went up Birch Creek, turned and ran up to the Catholic church. I crossed the highway and ran down to Friendship park around the armory and through the terrace past Bonneville and down to Hilltop and then home. I was sorer today than I was yesterday. My time was 45:48. The miles were as follows, 8:52, 9:14, 8:07, 8:14, 8:19.

Total Distance

I ran it in 2:14:56. My goal was to run a 9:00 pace. The course was mostly flat and/or slightly down hill. I started at Peak Performance and ran the Uintah loop and then went down to Artic Circle where I crossed the highway. I then ran through South Ogden to Friendship park and then around the armory and into the terrace. I went along the top of 5500 S. and down 500 W. to 4800 S. Ran past Bonneville and then turned down. Crossed the highway at Hilltop and ran down to Adams. From there I went down Adams to 20th. Turned up 20th to Monroe and then to the River Parkway. took parkway to Washington and then up to Mountain Perk. I felt really good the first 12 miles and then my thighs tightened up. I think they're still sore from the half marathon last week. I changed shoes last week from the Nimbus to the Vomero. Big mistake. I'm going to give the Vomero another week and then going back to the Nimbus. My miles were as follows;

I noticed you are running only 3 days a week. What do you do on other days?

From O-town runner on Tue, Aug 22, 2006 at 23:52:25

Unfortunately, not a lot. Earlier in the summer I was mixing it up with some mountain biking and swimming. However, I started coaching my son's football team three weeks and it has really cut into my run time. I'm concerned with St. George coming up that I haven't been running enough miles or days. We'll see how it goes.

From Sasha Pachev on Fri, Aug 25, 2006 at 08:46:58

You can try running to and from the practice. If you warm up and cool down with the boys during the practice on top of that, this will help you get the miles in.

Total Distance

I ran intervals up at Weber. I ran a mile and a half at a 8:30 pace to warm up. Then I did 8 800s. The pace ranged from 3:12 to 3:28 on the last one. Moast of them were right around 3:20. Then I ran a slow half mile to cool down. The total mileage tonight was eight. That included the walk/slow jog in between the intervals.

The first one shows you have plenty of speed to reach your 5 K and your marathon goals. It also shows that at this point you need mileage a lot more than intervals.

I bet that is a great scenic run. Do you feel like you are sucking a lot of exhaust? That would be my concern running on that highway. Are you training for the TOU or the St. George Marathon...or neither? Your Ogden Marathon time is exactly the same as my Las Vegas Marathon last december. When did you run the Ogden? I should join you for the Half-marathons that you run. When is the next one you are planning on running?

From Dee on Fri, Sep 08, 2006 at 10:45:28

It is a great run, especially this time of year with the leaves changing. Car exhaust has not been a problem. There's a very wide shoulder so oncoming traffic isn't a concern either. I'm training for St. George. My Ogden time was from this year. I'm not currently signed up for any halfs but I'm considering running the Other Half in Moab at the end of October. We have a good group who gets together and runs on the weekends. If you're up this way you're welcome any time.

time was 53:13. I ran up Jefferson and then up Birch Creek to the top, turned and went past Artic Circle and towards St. Josephs. Crossed the highway and turned down past Emerald Hills and then to Friendship Park and around the armory. Through the Terrace down past Bonneville. Crossed the highway at Hilltop and home. I was pretty sore the first two miles but my legs loosened up and I felt good the last four.

Total Distance

Due to time restraints I only ran four 800s last night. I ran a mile at an 8 minute clip and then the four 800s. My times were 2:54, 2:57, 2:51 and 2:57. Knowing I was only going to run four total I ran them a little faster than normal. Overall my legs felt great.

Total Distance

I wanted to average a nine minute pace which is a minute slower than I want to run St. George in. My time was 2:39:29 which is an 8:51 average. This will definatley be my last run in the Vomeros. Terible shoe. I picked up blisters on both feet at about mile 15 which didn't help the finish.

I ran a fairly slow five miles. My legs were still a little sore from Saturday's run. The first two miles was mostly up hill with the last three down/flat. I ran it in 46:37.

St. George Marathon--I ran it in 3:29:38. My goal was under 3:30 and I barely made it. Awesome experience. This was my first St. George marathon and it was incredible. I felt great until mile 23. Until that point I thought I'd get in under 3:25. The last couple of miles were rough, but I hung on and got my 3:30 goal.

Congratulations on hitting your goal. The last couple miles are supposed to be rough. You must have run a smart race.

Nice Work. That must feel so great to have made your goal. Did it make you nervous that last mile watching the clock? That is a great PR (14+ minutes).

Make sure to start training again as soon as you feel your body is able to do so. You've made your body fit, now you need to keep it fit.

I ran on the trails above Ogden with Anthony, John and Shannon. A lot of uphill. My legs felt much beter today and the trail work felt good.

Total Distance
3.00

I ran three miles in my neighborhood at a 9:00 minute pace. My legs are still a little sore. The first mile was a little rough, but I felt much better on miles 2 and 3. I'm holding the mileage down this week to make sure I've recovered okay. Next week I'll start to increase my runs to five miles.

Total Distance
3.50

I ran three and a half on Bonneville's track with my wife. I changed the pace every couple of laps between a slow jog and a race pace run.

Total Distance
3.00

I ran a three mile loop in my neighborhood. I ran it at about a 7:50 pace. It was the first time since St. George that I've ran that pace for an extended period. It felt good. My legs were a little sore but they're starting to feel better.

Total Distance
4.75

I ran with Todd tonight. the first two miles was mostly up hill with the last 2 3/4 down hill or flat. We maintained a 8:45 pace the first two miles and then dropped down to about 7:45 for the last three miles. My legs are definitely starting to feel better. I feel like I'm ready to resume my regular running pace and distances.

Total Distance
5.65

I ran in Morgan with Todd and Kaycie. Perfect running weather today. We started on a dirt road for the first three miles. It got pretty muddy so we turned around and ran the last 2 and a half on the pavement. Ran a 9 minute pace on the dirt, and then dropped down to between 7:30 and 8 minute miles on the pavement. My legs felt a little heavy today.

Same comment as the one I left in Evan's blog. You cannot reach your potential in the marathon if you have a habit of skipping days. A run must be something that happens daily unless there is something extremely out of the ordinary that would keep you from doing it (eg. a serious pending or existing injury), not something that happens when you have time, the mood and the weather are right, you feel good, etc. Kind of like the way you eat, go to work, sleep, etc.

Total Distance

I ran with Todd the loop from Peak Performance to the hospital and then down the toll road, through lower Uintah and then up Combe and back to Peak Performance. We maintained a steady 8 minute pace for the first 6 miles. Mile 7 is a steep uphill and I let Todd go. I ran mile 7 in 10:42. Once we got on top we ran a 7:30 pace for the last mile and a half. Overall, a good, fairly difficult run.

Total Distance
3.11

I ran a nice easy, slow three miles tonight. Legs a little sore after Sunday's run. Plan to push it a little harder tomorrow.

Total Distance
5.85

I ran a loop from Todd's house that went out onto 89 around Harrison and then up and around the Dee Events Center. We eventually ended up on Glassman and back to Todds. We kept the pace between 8:00 and 8:15. My legs are still feeling tired.

Total Distance
3.00

I ran three slow easy miles in my neighborhood at a 9:00 pace.

Total Distance
10.00

I ran ten miles with Todd. We started at Peak Performance and ran to the Dee Events Center. At the DEC we went up the hill and around Weber State. We then made our way through the neighborhoods past Mt. Ogden park and then down about 27th and then back to the store. We maintained an 8:00 pace (except up the hill by the DEC) for the first 7 miles. I really struggled the last 7 miles and dropped down to 9:00 miles for 8 and 9 and then back to 8:15 for mile 10. A good, fairly difficult run with a lot of hills.

Total Distance
5.00

I ran the trails above Ogden. I was suppose to run with Anthony, John and the group but I got there late and missed them so I ran alone. Today was a perfect fall day for running. I had an enjoyable, but difficult run. There were a lot of steep hills on the trail I choose today. I started at the exercise trailhead above Weber and ended up on the trail into Malan's basin. I turned around part way up to Malan's basin and returned.

Total Distance
4.31

I ran with Todd. We ran a course in my neighborhood. the average pace was 8:20.

Total Distance
6.42

I ran with Todd. We did the loop up Jefferson, then Birch Creek, past Artic Circle. Crossed the highway at the Catholic Church and then down through the Terrace past Bonneville and then crossed at Hilltop. Our pace was 8:32.

Total Distance
7.35

I ran with Todd and Kacie. We did the loop from Peak Performance, down Combe to lower Uintah and across the highway. Then to the toll road. Up the toll road past the hospital and then made our way back to Peak Performance. I was late arriving and got left so John drove me to catch up. I missed the first mile and a half. A good run. The toll road about killed me and had to walk a little near the top. the pace was 8:44.

Total Distance
10.36

I ran with Shannon, John, Anthony and Cherrie. We started with the Combe loop from Peak Performance and then down past Golf City. Crossed the highway and went through the Terrace and past Bonneville. Crossed the highway back at Hilltop and then down to Adams. From Adams we went straight down to 26th and ended at Mountain Perk. The pace was 8:25. The last two miles were 7:56 and 7:37. This was the first run since the marathon that I felt really good.

Total Distance
6.35

I ran with Todd. We started at my house and did the loop up birch Creek, through the Terrace and back across at Hilltop. A good run with the first two miles being uphill and the last four flat or gradually down hill. Our pace was 8:13

Total Distance
4.40

I ran with Todd. We started at his house and did the loop down Washington to Harrison. Along Old Post and across Harrison at 4800. ran Glasmann and then back to Todds. Our pace was 8:12. It was quite a bit faster until I hit glassman and then slowed down quite a bit up the hill.

Five of it was the Trukey Trot in Ogden at Ogden Regional Hospital. I ran the five in 37:07. I didn't run a real smart race. I went out too fast the first couple of miles where it's uphill and then I didn't have the kick I wanted coming back down hill. I ran with Mike for the first three miles and then he left me. He came in at at just over 36 which is about where I wanted to be. I did knock off a little over two minutes from last year.

Total Distance
8.85

I ran with Todd and Celeste. We started at Peak Performance and did the toll road loop. I was really sore today. I maintained between an 8:30 and 9:00 pace except the toll road which I came up in 9:57. After the run went to the BYU-U game. Great game, better outcome.

Total Distance

I ran with

Todd, Mike, Anthony, John, Shannon and others. We started at Peak Performance and ended at Mountain Perk. We started at 7:30 and it was cold. I warmed up after a couple of miles and felt really good for most of the run. I've been sick so this was first run in a week. We maintained a pace that stayed between 8:10 and 8:30 every mile.

Race: Las Vegas Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:55:13
Total Distance

I ran the Las Vegas Marathon. I went in to the race not worried about my time, just hoping to have a good experience and finish it. I hadn't run farther than ten miles since St. George and at mile 18 I really started to feel it. Overall, I didn't care much for this marathon. It was way too crowded the first six miles and I wore myself out trying to run around slower runners. The Course was pretty boring after we left the strip. Overall the race was pretty disorganized. This isn't one I would recommend.

Comments
From Cody on Sun, Dec 17, 2006 at 18:03:12

My biggest peeve about the 2005 Vegas Marathon was the first 2-3 miles running around the slow walkers who for some reason thought that they should be in the front. The wind was nasty, record low temperatures, poor training all discouraged me from running that again. It took me 6 months to have the desire to train again. But, after redemption through TOU I am loving running again.

See ya at Ogden!

Total Distance
5.25

I ran with Anthony and the group from Peak Performance down to Mountain Perk. The rest of them ran 9, but this being my first run since the marathon I didn't want to go very far. The legs were a little sore but not as bad as I expected and definitely as sore as they were following St. Georg.

Total Distance

I ran three miles on the treadmill. I was reminded why I hate treadmills.

Total Distance

I ran with Todd today during my lunch break. We left from Peak Performance and ran to the football stadium at Weber State and then back. We ran the first three miles at an 8 minute pace and then I slowed down to a 8:30-8:45 pace on the way back. My legs felt pretty good with the exception of my right calf which ached every time we ran up hill.

Total Distance

I ran the first two on a treadmill because the roads were icy. After two miles I couldn't stand it anymore so I went outside and did another three miles on the road. I ran a pretty slow 9:20 pace.

Total Distance

I ran from my house to the office. ZI ran exactly three miles and my time was 22:28. I felt pretty good so I opened it up a bit. My legs are starting to feel better.

Total Distance

I ran with Todd, Anthony, John, Dave, Quinton and Kacie. We started at Peak Performance. The plan was to run to the football stadium and back. We started out at an 8:00 pace. At about mile 2 my right cramped up to the point I could hardly walk. I'm not sure what was going on. I turned around at mile 2 1/2 and made my way back. Around mile four the pain went away. I'm not sure what was wrong. Hopefully, it's nothing major.

Total Distance
3.00

I ran a slow three miles by myself. My time was 27:40. My legs didn't cramp up today, but they were really sore.
