Alright.  July 1st and time for new commitments.  It looks like I'm probably going to get into St. George after all, so it's time to get serious. The goal from here on out is 200 mile months.  We'll see how that goes.  I started out the month on a good note.  I met up with Todd and Mike at Beus Pond and we ran 800s.  I ran a couple of warm-up miles.  Then did four 800s.  I started out with a 3:23, then 3:21, 3:14 and 3:03.  My legs were pretty sore at first but gradually loosened up.   That 3:03 may have been the fastest 800 I've run.  I'll have to go back and check sometime.  I was in a wreck today and my car was towed so I caught a ride to Todd's house and then ran the almost two miles home for a total of 6.75 miles.

I left my place in Macks Inn and ran down to Cascade.  From there went to Big Springs Drive, turned back towards Macks Inn.  Ran to Macks, crossed the bridge and went up river until the gate. Turned and went back down the river, crossed at the bridge and back home. Another beautiful run in Island Park with perfect temperatures and even better scenery.

I ran the Sawtelle All American Stampede Half Marathon in Island Park.  This is the third year I've run this race and it doesn't get any easier.  The race starts out on a rarely used Forest Service dirt road.  It's in pretty bad shape with a lot of ruts, rocks and roots.  It's impossible to get into any kind of groove the first three miles.  After three miles it turns onto a better graded dirt road that is easier to run on.  This lasts for approximately a mile and a half and then you hit pavement for another mile and a half or so that has two fairly steep rolling hills on it.  The race is an out and back so you return the way you came.  The entire course is full of rolling hills so there's a lot of climbing.  I spent the three days prior to the race waterskiing and eating lots of food including dutch over chicken, potatos and cobbler the night before the race. Also stayed up late hanging out at the fire at Kunzler's place.  Needless to say I wasn't primed for a good run.  I picked up Todd at his place the morning of the race and then met up with Sean, Mike and Joel at the start. There were a lot of high school kids at the start and I figured they were running the 5 or 10 k.  Other than that it didn't look like an overally fast field this year.  The race started out and we started a gradual climb right away.  They start the 5 and 10 k at the same time and they do out and backs on the same course.  A big group went out a head of me including all of the high school kids.  I hit the turn around mark for the 5k and only saw one person who had turned around.  That meant all of the high school kids were running the 10k or the half.  Right before the 10k turn around 15 or so people passed me going back to the finish.  I wasn't sure how many were left ahead of me but figured there were no more than 10. As I approached the turn around point for the half marathon I was in fifth place with a pretty good lead on a group of 5-10 people who were behind me.  The first place person had about a quarter mile lead on me, and he was closely followed by Todd and then a female, another male and me.  It looked like the male and female were in striking distance and I kept them in sight until about the 11 mile mark when they pulled ahead.  When I realized I wasn't going to catch them I pulled over to relieve myself and I was putting everything together a runner caught me.  I chased him for about a half mile, but he gradually pulled away.   I ended up in 6th.  Todd beat my by a little over 2 minutes and he ended up in third and won some money.  Anyway, I had a good time and hopefully burned off some the calories I'd consumed.

I went to Beus Pond to run Yasso 800s. Met up with Todd, Mike, Quentin and Shannon.  Ran a warm up mile and then 5 800s.  I did them in 3:02, 3:08, 3:08, 3:15 and 3:10.  I was hoping to run them all in under 3:20, so I felt good about the times.

I ran with Todd and Mike.  We started at the Albertsons in S. Ogden and ran the Combe loop backwards.  From there we went along Harrison to Old Post. Took Old Post to the Dee Events Center.  Went up Skyling, did a loop around Beus Pond, then continue up Skyline and down to 36th.  Went over to Mt. Ogden Park and then made our way to 20th St.  Went down past El Monte Golf Course to the mouth of the canyon where we got on the river parkway and took it down to Grant and then up to 23 rd Street and to the Frontrunner terminal where Todd had his car parked.

My 40th birthday and I felt like an old man.  I think I water skied too hard over the last several days or something, because my legs just weren't cooperating on this run.  Got a little over 4 miles in before I got back to the cabin and more waterskiing.

Todd and I left his house and went up past the old Golf City to Harrison, crossed, and did the Combe loop backwards.  Went along Harrison to Old Post.  Took it to 4600, crossed Harrison again and went down to Glassman and back to Todds.  Took it easy the first couple of miles in the nine minute range, then dropped down to 7:45s and back to 9s the last couple of miles up Glasmann and Chambers.  Had a 8:32 pace for the run.

ran 6 800s on the track up at Weber State.  Started with a 8:30 mile to get warmed up then knocked out the 800s.  The times ranged between 3:04 and 3:16 with the 3:04 being the last one.  After that we ran every step up and down on the west side of the stadium and then did a cool down lap.  Total mileage was 6.

I ran with Todd tonight.  We left his house and ran past the old Golf City, crossed Harrison and ran old post to Eastwood, back across Harrison and back to Todd's house.  Had a 7:39 average pace, which was quite a bit faster after the 8:42 first mile.  After yesterday's stinker of a run, where I labored to maintain a nine minute pace it felt good to run a faster pace.
